Dear Spirit Guide,

When I asked you to send me a card to write about, this was not the card I wanted. Can we try again? No? REALLY???? Ok. Thanks anyway.

Sincerely,

ME

This was the conversation I had when I flipped over today’s card, THE DEVIL. Eventually I was going to need to write about this card, but it fell on 9/11, Patriots Day. Remember, I don’t believe anything is coincidental, and nothing is random, so there must be a reason I’m meant to write about this card today.

The devil card is not an evil card but I’ve always considered it a warning. This typically means something in your life is in excess, out of balance, and it’s pulling you away from your principles, distracting you from your spiritual journey. You need to address it as soon as you can, and re-center yourself in order to get past the chaos and confusion this card brings with it.

Amazing. This is the card I’m to write about on the day when an incredibly evil act occurred killing thousands of Americans, and injuring countless more. 9/11 changed our country forever. I remember exactly where I was that day, and I’m sure you do too. I was living on the west coast, so everything was very early for me. It was my oldest son’s 11th birthday, and he was up eating his breakfast, and watching cartoons. I was still in bed cuddling his little brothers (ages 4 and almost 2) when he came running in and told me the sky was falling in New York...and I needed to see. Together we watched the second plane hit, and the towers fell. Everything changed that day. America was attacked. Terror had landed on our shores.

I can go on and on about the evil in the world that constantly pushes us away from peace, and all the theories that go with that...but I won’t. I will never use this blog to lecture anyone, that’s not why I started it. Instead, I’ll talk about how this card impacts me, and why I think it’s one of the more important cards in the tarot deck.

All of us get distracted. All of us fall off the path we are meant to be on at some point...multiple times. We get busy at work and we neglect our families. We get busy relaxing on the couch we forget the promises made to get those 10,000 steps every day...or you get obsessed with getting those steps you find yourself pacing the living room because you MUST get them done. Those are the little things. We all do these, and it pulls us out of balance. When we are out of balance we stop feeling that beautiful connection that brings harmony to our lives. We get sick, we get injured, we become forgetful...and the stress begins to pile up and break us down.

Then there are the big things associated with this card that are less common, but when you fall away from your path—things you think you’d never do seem to become opportunities you can’t pull away from. These could be things like addiction, stealing, hurting people on purpose, pretty much anything that hurts you or others; things that could land you in jail or the hospital.

This card is a warning. Maybe you aren’t out stealing cars or robbing banks...but maybe you are neglecting something or someone because it’s not as fun as what you are doing now. Sitting on the couch all day, watching endless hours of tv while checking Facebook is a trap I can easily fall into. In fact I’m stuck in a rut these days doing exactly this! I’m beginning to feel yucky, and my body has aches and pains that weren’t there last week. I know what I need to do about it. This card was sent to me today as a warning of what is coming if I don’t change my ways.

When the devil card turns up in your spread, it will take your breath away, and give you pause. It should...it needs to. The beauty of Tarot lies in the messages your cards give you. Nothing is set in stone, and when the devil card pops up you still have the opportunity to figure out what’s going on and what you can do about it. I’m only talking about one card at a time in my blogs, but a reading would give you several cards. You’d have a pretty specific picture and a direction to go. Don’t let this devil scare you, but don’t ignore him either. When he shows up it’s time to get real with yourself, take an honest inventory, and fix the imbalance. It may be your only warning....

Tomorrow, I’m drinking more water, I’m limiting my screen time, and I’m going to go for a walk...maybe squeeze in some time to meditate too. I’m out of balance, and I know why. Time to get busy!
