This card is one that challenges most people. The image in the mirror shows her bound, with stormy skies and rough seas. She’s absolutely powerless and vulnerable. Standing outside of the mirror you see clear skies, calm seas and that same woman standing strong and confident—but still hesitant. The message here is that you are holding yourself back with imaginary bindings. You are also the only one that can free yourself. This is the FACE YOUR FEAR card.

I am a big chicken. Fear holds me back from a lot of things. Sky diving would be pretty cool except you’ll never find me actually doing it. My fear of heights would prevent me from even getting anywhere near that open airplane door let alone making the jump, even tied to an instructor! I’ve been caught a few times backing out of many things last minute. It might have sounded great at the time but when the moment came to act, I couldn’t follow through.

I’ve also found that my bravado has decreased as I grow older. When you are young, life is exciting and new! YOLO is really only a term embraced by the young as they jump off a cliff or some other death defying act. I think in general as we age, we have experience to draw from and realize that the risks involved are real, and death is a factual potential threat. We also have a lot more to lose.

Life without taking risks is boring. It’s safe, but it’s not going to spark growth. You can live every day within the confines of the rules you set for yourself, and be pretty content. Some people, this is what they work for. They want their bubble where they control the day to day outcomes and surprises are minimal. Most people can’t live their life this way with surprises and challenges thrown at them fairly regularly to prevent life from getting stagnant. Even if you THINK you live this way, how often do you try something new just because or maybe you are forced to because detours are put in your path? It’s a lot more often than you think. This card is about your reaction to those moments.

When you are faced with a challenge, do you cry, and turn the other way? Do you cling to the past so you don’t have to face the present or the future? Maybe you are the rare type that really enjoys being pushed to your limits and you embrace challenges because it feels good to conquer life. There are physical obstacles that are pretty obvious, and overcoming those, you rise to the occasion or you find a way around it. That’s pretty straightforward. But what about the spiritual challenges and emotional/mental challenges? How do you face those?

Growth can only happen when you are pushed out of your comfort zone. That’s where the fear comes in. That’s this card today. You do have a choice. We always have free will, but at some point you will have to face what you’ve been ignoring if you want to grow as a person. Physical stuff is easy but this emotional and spiritual stuff is really hard. The death of my son challenged me to my breaking point, and it still does. His death forced me to explore my faith and reset boundaries of what it means to be dead. Spiritually this challenged me. Doors have been opened for me that I never knew existed. Card reading for myself and others never would have happened if I hadn’t first faced spiritual challenges to my faith. I’ve changed a lot in just a few months but it hasn’t been easy.

This card is prompting me to take a personal inventory. I need to be honest with myself about what my fears are and what I need to do to move past them. A personal inventory has to be honest. What is the root of this fear for you? I know for me it’s failure, fear of being wrong and fear of being judged. Yours are probably similar, these are common roots. Based on these I can then flesh out what’s really holding me back and take this on, a piece at a time. For example, going LIVE for Tarot Tuesdays on Facebook was a major issue for me. I was asked to do it in a group and my first instinct was heck no. The group encouraged me and supported me through my first event, and I did the very best I could. I swallowed those fears, and I managed to get through my first event. The outcome was very favorable, leaving me feeling pretty good about how it went. I helped people, I used my new spiritual gifts, and I successfully engaged a group of 10 strangers. From this, I launched a website that includes this blog, and a home business that provides card readings for people and classes. I now do daily card pulls, and weekly spreads free on my Madhawk tarot page. You can find a live chat there most Tuesday evenings.

You can’t take things on as giant pieces, that’s far too overwhelming for even the bravest people, but you CAN break things down into steps, and with each step you get closer to breaking free of the fears that are holding you back. Yes, spiritual and emotional obstacles are harder because only you can see them and experience them, but the process of beating them isn’t all that different from a physical obstacle.

The woman in this card sees that she is trapped. She sees the dangers she is in and she has the tools to break herself free, and we’ve caught her the moment before she chooses to act rather than run. You can sense her determination and mindset even though you can’t really see her face. She is armed and ready to slice through those bindings. Are you ready to face your own fears? You have everything you need to succeed, you only need to choose to act. Now is the time....break free.
